I've been wanting to do this for some time and decided this would be the month I would jump on this. Then the a/c died and other things happened and I thought dang, I won't be able to catch up and get in on this one. But today I decided I was going to give it a try. The poem for day one was something about our childhood. So here's my first contribution. Most of these will be rough drafts and I'll try to tweak them later.
The Day My Sister Forgot Me!
Kindergarten days should be
happy fun filled times
of kids on the playground
laughter, sand boxes and swings.
I was a morning student
and every day at lunch
my older sister, Linda,
walked me home
past scary woods and would
tell me stories of kids
who were lost and killed
and buried there.
Then I got chicken pox
and became very sick
unable to attend the
classes I lay in bed
miserable with fever
and chicken pox itching
even in my throat so
I couldn’t swallow right.
When I got better they put
me in afternoon kindergarten
and Linda was to wait for me
to walk me safely home.
She had become accustomed to
the morning routine and
after school ended headed off
with her friends – forgot about me.
I waited as the playground
emptied out and students
Aad teachers headed away.
I sat and waited. I knew
when she got home
mom would send her
back for me. No way would
I walk past those woods alone.
So I sat and swang and sang
to myself and waited until
I saw her as she headed back
for me. She never forgot again.
